In 1988, when Manfrotto (then Bogen) tripods began to be found in the hands of birders, the thing birders loved most is the simple, silky, smooth panning action of the head. Twenty years later, it hasn’t changed. What has changed is that now there is an option. The 128RC2, with the locking, quick release head is hardly changed from the head that changed the face of birding–a tripod head so smooth that it allowed birders to follow birds in flight at high magnification without those concentration compromising skips and jerks that vexes other tripods. At one pound lighter 700 RC2 is just as smooth and almost as facile as the heavier model (the tightening levers tend to need a bit of tinkering to get just the right tension for smooth panning). But both heads are excellent and both will fit the tripods in our lineup including the three just described.
